Up Down

"Up Down"
Scanned Sketch/CS2
Fall 2008

I did some sketches of my head from different angles. No, I'm not that into myself. I just like angles.

Johns and Guitar

"Johns and Guitar"
8.5x11
Pencil/ballpoint
Spring 2008

This is one of my favorites from last semester. Done from a photo. I couldn't see the other hand and I couldn't decide how to draw it since it was missing so I drew a couple just to get a feel. Then I realized it looked kinda crazy so I kept it. I'm particularly proud of the lowest hand since it looks very Renaissance to me for some reason. Like a delicate, delicate cherub.

Apartment

From my Italy sketchbook. Trying the fish-eye lens idea.

The Punisher

"The Punisher"
Sharpie/ps
8.5x12
Summer 2008

One of the best superheroes (or anti-superheroes) out there. Too bad the movie was only semi-good. Who the fuck cast John Travolta in that? Shame on you.
I think the best part about this kind of comic art is that you can use minimal lines and get the point across. Which you would think would be easy since not much is put on paper, but it's actually really difficult. Still playing around with this idea.

Jackson 2

"Jackson 2"
Sharpie/ps
8.5x12
Summer 2008

This somehow looks like a woodcut, although that was unintentional. And I could probably never do a woodcut like this because I've tried and they don't agree with me. I do enjoy the angle. I wish it was alittle more drastic though.

Low

"Low"
Pencil
8.5x12
Spring 2008

Hands are cool. Guitars are cool. Hands with guitars in them are even cooler.

Blue Man

"Blue Man"
Marker
8.5x12
Winter 2008

Messing around with transitioning colors. Sunglasses are harder to draw than one would think, but these came out alright.

Johns 2

"Johns 2"
Pencil/Sharpie
8.5x12
Fall 2007

The nose isn't that great but the line weight and angle is kind of cool.

Johns

"Johns"
Pencil/Sharpie
5x7
Fall 2007

By far, my favorite of the Johns series.

DJ

"DJ"
Sharpie/colored pencil

Fall 2007

Another Daniel Johns. No reason for the green, except that it's a nice color.

Tired

"Tired"
Sharpie
5x7
Fall 2007

Daniel Johns. Particularly proud of this for the sheer difficulty of the angle. Damn you, angle.

Bernini Statue

"Bernini Statue"
Pencil
8.5x12
Spring 2008

Wish I could specify which statue this is but I did it from a photo. I love Bernini's folds in clothing. It's very graphic.

Punk Johnsy

"Punk Johnsy"
Sharpie
5x7
Fall 2007

Let it be known, I love Daniel Johns. If you are not aware of who this is, google that shit. He's everything that is good about Australia. Plus he makes (or made?) some great music. He's a staple in my sketchbooks. My muse.

The Florence Bathroom

"The Florence Bathroom"
pencil
8.5x12
Spring 2008

Sundays sucked in Italy. Everything was closed, even the school. Spent many many weekends drawing the toilet from different angles. The apartment was definitely good for still life drawings.

Jackson

"Jackson"
8.5x12
Pencil, darkened in ps
Summer 2008

I watched Saving Private Ryan everyday for about a week during the summer. Simply because it's a kickass movie. Jackson is my favorite character cause he has some cool facial features. And he's a sniper, duh.

Logan

"Logan"
Photoshop
Summer 2008

Another sketch scanned in ps and colored. This was going to be for my brother, but ironically he still hasn't seen it yet and doesn't know it exists. Not completely happy with the coloring but it works I guess. I'll have to print out a hardcopy and give it to him sometime.

Why Do We Fall?

"Why Do We Fall?"
Photoshop
Summer 2008

Sketch scanned/altered in photoshop. Kind of a flashback Bruce Wayne would have of his childhood. Also I just wanted to try the new rain effect I picked up. I did a bit of a cop out though with the alley background, thanks to google and desaturation.

Where's Harvey Dent?

"Where's Harvey Dent?"
Photoshop
Summer 2008

This was a sketch I scanned in and colored/manipulated in photoshop. It was during my big Batman kick since 1) Batman is cool and 2) I'll find any excuse to do comic book art.

Chris Martin

"Chris Martin"
Paper
18x24
Summer 2008

Paul Murphy introduced this collage method to us in Life Drawing I and I sucked at it so hard. Then, during a bout of unemployment this past summer, I tried it again (using gray scale markers instead of paint) and it came out 10x better. Plus, it's Chris Martin and he's awesome.

Bale Vector

"Bale Vector"
Photoshop
Summer 2008

Another Bale. I never knew how to do vectors/pen pop art until I youtubed it and this was the first one I completed. I like the concept of building a picture by layers of light and dark. Although I've realized it gets very old about 1/3 of the way through.
He's so pretty.

The Kiss

"The Kiss"
acrylic on canvas
18x24
winter 2007/summer 2008

Started this over winter break in 2007 and got stuck on the eye part. Eventually picked it back up and finished it during the next summer. I have a fascination of drawing/painting lips and noses and tend to use myself for various expressions. The pink/green/blue combo ended up meshing really well.

Rage

"Rage"
acrylic on canvas
about 16x16
Summer 2008

The very recognizable, very awesome cover of one of the RATM albums. This was a hassle because it involved all the colors that I was running out of, but I did not realize this until I was too far gone. Needs more touching up but it gets the point across.

Youth and Young Manhood

"Youth and Young Manhood"
acrylic on canvas
about 15x15
Summer 2008

Pt.2 of the album apartment series I have. I'm so jealous of the original artist who created this cover. This was done in about 2 hours which I enjoy because it came out pretty rad and required minimal touch-ups/color/etc. I think there's a yellow smudge on the lettering now that I look at it. That bothers me now.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

"Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"
acrylic on canvas
about 16x16
Summer 2008

Most frustrating figure to paint. I've tried it so many times and this is the most successful. This is part of a 3-piece series I have of album covers hanging in my room. Great album.
